1988 charlotte hornets roster6/25/2023 The fans celebrated the success of the successful launch, not yet knowing the profound impact the Hornets would have on the region. More than thirty years later, those players still reflect on that moment with awe and gratitude. The Hornets lost their first game by 40 points, yet the arena game them a standing ovation. There are many business lessons that can be extracted from the Hornets' start-up.Īnother that comes to mind is the importance of celebrating success. Thanks for sharing this! Those times were electric in Charlotte.in spite of an abysmal record. The number of people you have to weed through to find that diamond is now larger and the risk of making a bad hire greater. However, during times of increasing layoffs, when companies think “oh it’s easier to hire” I’d argue it’s actually worse because the same amount of diamonds are out there but the rough just got a lot bigger. The business world is exactly the same, and excluding entire teams, sites, or functions being eliminated, companies generally aren’t cutting their best and brightest when they announce layoffs. Do good people get caught up in bad situations? Absolutely, and obviously that’s unfortunate, and hopefully leads you to a diamond in the rough when you’re hiring. I’ll be forever grateful for Muggsy, DC for 3, Tripucka, Hoppen, and others that were a part of those times and played every game like it was Game 7 of The Finals, but each of them had pretty serious issues and was why they were available in the draft. Why do I bring this up? I had someone stop me over the weekend and say “hey, I’ve seen some layoffs in the news, how’s business?” My reply was I’m busier than ever and he was surprised so I shared with him the story of the 1988 expansion draft. Guess who was protected by their teams? Certainly everyone on that list above and every other player on a team who was most likely providing more value than they cost. Something else I didn’t know was that each NBA team could protect 8 of the 13 players on their roster making those players ineligible to be drafted by the Hornets. college draft (would add 2-3 players), and 3. expansion draft (this would make up the majority of the team), 2. What I didn’t know about the buildout of the Hornets roster (and the Miami Heat) was that it would be done via three primary methods, 1. If you were an NBA fan at the time (or just didn’t live under a rock), you might recall some of the higher profile names of that era, just look at the MVP voting that season: Jordan, Bird, Magic, Barkley, Clyde the Glide, and the list goes on. I’ll take those 5 guys and give you the field and like my odds. As a 10 year old, I’m thinking, Jordan is from North Carolina and he’s going to play for the Hornets, yay! I think every person in Charlotte, NC were beside themselves when it was announced in 1987 that we’d be one of the cities selected for a new NBA team. I still have memorabilia from that season and other early seasons in the Hornets franchise and though I don’t follow them as closely as I used to…something about the team moving, coming back under a different name, changing names, all the while being terrible will do that to you, but I digress. Publishes this article on our blog yesterday and wanted to share here as well.
